October 1911. Irkutsk.

Boom town. City in the wilderness. City on the edge. Three years ago, the sky tore apart over a remote Siberian riverbed, and the curious have pilgrimaged from near and far only to get stuck in Irkutsk, a thousand kilometers from Tunguska.

An international team of mages, academics, and adventurers sets out for Siberia to discover the secrets at the heart of the Russian Empire. Maybe this team will be different. Maybe they'll come back.

Or maybe they, too, will get mired in Irkutsk with its shifting political currents originating in faraway Saint Petersburg, to say nothing of the religious zealots in search of answers of their own, the profiteers willing to fleece new arrivals for all they're worth, or the push and pull of a demoralized military anxious about the next unwinnable war.

Welcome to Anthem, where Rasputin is the good guy, the magic is fundamentally broken, and the dead teach us to live again.

Irkutsk was an outpost established near Lake Baikal in 1652 for gold and fur trading. Now at the important crossroads between China and Moscow, Irkutsk is the wealthy home of the nation's exiles -- artists, officers, and nobles. One exile for every two men, and just a stone's throw from the most exciting explosion to rock the planet in recorded history. Governor's Palace, Right Bank, Left Bank

The Podkamennaya Tunguska, or Stony Tunguska, is an underground river in Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia. It is an eastern tributary of the Yenisei and is named for the pebble fields it flows beneath. The river is the home of the Mangazeya Cossacks, Tungus clans, and various fur trappers and traders. The Tunguska Event of 1908 occured 8 km SSE of Lake Cheko.

The Winter Palace is the official residence of the Russian monarchs. Following the Bloody Massacre in 1905, the Imperial Family relocated to the more secure and secluded Alexander Palace at Tsarskoe Selo, returning here only for formal and state occasions.

Vasilievsky is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Saint Petersburg. It is split between the eastern half, home of the State University of Saint Petersburg and many of the more traditional colleges and trade schools, and the western -- home of the Imperial School of Battle Magic, and the less aggressive Saint Petersburg College of Magic.

The Duma is the lower legislative body introduced to the Russian Empire by Tsar Nicholas in 1906. It was a semi-representative body heavily weighted in the favor of landowners and wealthy industrialists.
